Cancun Beaches and Water
Do Cancun beaches offer more than just a view of the water?
Yes. Cancun beaches are in many respects the hub of a large percentage of Cancun sports and activities. Hotels that border the beach aim to anticipate and accommodate every desire here. They offer their guests sun shelters, waiters, exotic beach bars, lifeguards, and public showers.
Have the beaches been damaged by recent storms and hurricanes?
There has been temporary damage at times, such as in the case of Hurricane Wilma, but this damage is quickly repaired almost as soon as it happens. Keep in mind that Cancun has some of the best year-round weather in the world, so inclement weather here is very rare. When there is damage to the beach, Cancun restoration reverses it very quickly. Take for example the recent restoration project after Hurricane Wilma, which was not only efficient, but ingenious. Survey crews determined that much of the sand on the island had been pushed into the water north of the island. 55,000 cubic meters of this sand was dredged up from the bottom and then placed back where it belonged.
Cancun beaches are actually better than ever now because of this, because their size has grown by approximately 50%.
Are there lifeguards on duty to protect swimmers? Is the water safe to swim in?
Yes and yes. Lifeguards patrol Cancun beach constantly to ensure that no one gets hurt. Local weather is also closely monitored, and colored flags are used to indicate the effects of current weather on the water. At various places in the sand, you will see either black, red, yellow, or green flags indicating respective levels of safety. If a flag is black, do not get in the water under any circumstances. Green is ideal, and yellow and red represent varying degrees of caution.
