Cancun Weather

Cancun weather is at least partially sunny for almost every day of the year. In January and February, the lowest temperatures are in the high sixties, and in the peak of the summer months, the high temperatures are usually in the nineties. Between April and October, the median temperature hovers around 80 degrees consistently.

Cancun weather, although tropical year round in this respect, does have two rainy seasons (as all tropical geographies do).

From May –June and October-December it is common for it to rain for a while a few times a week. This rain can be very heavy but normally does not last long. Almost no one ever has it rain for the entirety of their vacation in Cancun. Weather here is also a bit strange in the sense that it may rain heavily on the Island around the Hotel Zone and be sunny just a few miles up the road in Cancun City.

Even after the heaviest of downpours, things almost always lighten up with bright sunshine in an hour or less. Many vacationers actually like it to rain a bit, believe it or not. Because so many people from the Northern United States and Europe travel to Mexico on vacation, having a few hours of rain on a hot day helps cool things off a bit—especially if a nice breeze follows.

If you really like a good stiff breeze to cool you off, consider coming to Cancun between September-November when the weather is at its windiest. If you prefer sunshine all the time and like it hot, the months of July and August are the best times to visit. Regardless, it is unlikely that you will see a day where it is cloudy all day long with no sun. This is the tropics, after all.

Please be aware that rain, wind, or shine, Cancun weather is something that you should keep an eye on. This is very important if you plan to rent a jeep and drive down through the jungle to Akumel or another seaside resort. If you do not have the tarp on top of the jeep, you will not even see the rain coming before it soaks you and the vehicle thoroughly. If the wind picks up after this, you might even get a chill driving back to your hotel. Be prepared, and you can enjoy your drive rain or shine.

If you are here in either rainy season, listening to Cancun weather reports is something you should take time to do every morning before venturing to far from your hotel. It is best to listen to more than one, because the rains appear and disappear so sporadically like this that having multiple sources (and satellite feeds) gives you a more comprehensive forecast with which to plan your day.
